When working with Patrick, each session will be tailored to focus on the areas of needs improvement identified during the initial fitness assessment. However, it is not uncommon for other deficiencies to "pop up" over the training period. When this happens, time is set aside with the client to discuss this new concern and identify if s/he would like for us to incorporate exercises for addressing this new concern immediately or in future sessions. If additional expertise is needed, Patrick will let the client know as well.
Once you have identified what realistic results you want to achieve, Patrick can recommend and develop a plan for helping you to get the realistic results you desire using the START S.M.A.R.T.E.R | GET S.M.A.R.T Approach during training sessions. If a scheduled exercise will not work for your performance, there is always a safe alternative.

If you have had membership at a "big box gym(s)" you may have felt that a large gym may not represent an environment that is supportive of the exercise experience you want (e.g. waiting to use equipment, equipment needs cleaning, loud environment, distractions etc.) One of the best parts of working with Patrick in the YOUTRAINFITNESS® private personal training studio is you no longer have to be concerned about those issues. Furthermore, strangers will not be watching you while you exercise and our environment allows you to be comfortable expressing all of your accomplishments and struggles with each exercise. Patrick has had over 10 years of teaching experience working with adolescents with special needs so he understands patience, persons who are self-conscious about their body image, persons with reported low self-esteem, persons with reported lack of confidence and persons feeling less than (which you are not) because of how you are judged by society. Rest assured, Patrick welcomes you to show up as you are so that we can focus our training sessions on helping you to achieve your exercise goals. We focus on what matters to you!
When it comes to making progress on your exercise goals, results will vary based of specific parameters. For example, results may be influenced by the following:
Frequency you exercise with Patrick and/or on your own. If just starting/restarting, more may be better. While a 60 minutes session may seem like a long time for someone who has been physically inactive, the 60 minutes session may consist of various exercises that may not be strenuous and beneficial. For example, less strenuous exercises may be mobility, balance, and flexibility whereas more strenuous exercises may be core, cardiovascular, muscular strength, and endurance. The strenuous exercises may be limited to 1 set of 10-15 repetitions.
The intensity you workout (appropriate intensity tends to be greater when working with a trainer). I cannot tell you how many times clients are ready to give-up on an exercise when they physically can do more safely. Patrick's role is to help them to "push themselves" to demonstrate this possibility safely.
The time you dedicated to your exercise session. It's always best to give the most you have, especially if the goal is fat loss. Patrick can make recommendations based on the type of exercises you plan to perform.
The type of exercise you perform matters. If you are physically conditioned to jog, jog. While walking is beneficial, if the goal is fat loss and you don't have any physical limitations, jogging will be more advantageous. The YOUTRAINFITNESS® private personal training studio has the proper cardio equipment for your progression from the least strenuous, recumbent bike to next strenuous, upright bike to next strenuous, elliptical to most strenuous, treadmill.
The type of exercise you enjoy to perform is also key to getting the results you want. If you don't like to walk on the treadmill but like the elliptical, you should use the elliptical most of the time. Why most of the time and not all of the time? Well, performing impact and non-impact exercises are both beneficial for stressing and protecting your joints if the concern is merely a preference and not a physical limitation.
So as you can see, exercise is a true science and Patrick can help you to sift through these variations for providing you with the best results.

LET’S GET PERSONAL ABOUT YOUR TRAINER
Patrick Service, MS ACSM-EP is a fitness professional who is qualified to develop and implement a personalized exercise program for individuals from a diverse population that ranges from athletes to those with delicate needs (cancer survivors).
Prior to opening the YOUTRAINFITNESS® private personal training studio, Patrick worked as a personal trainer at the UNC Wellness Centers in NW Cary for eight years. Prior to working at the UNC Wellness Centers, Patrick worked as a licensed physical and special education teacher at the Whitaker School in Butner, NC for 10 years; serving adolescents who were classified as behaviorally and emotionally disturbed.
As a trainer, Patrick helps individuals of all ages to identify potential obstacles that may occur to disrupt reaching exercise goals and develop strategies for overcoming those obstacles for improving their Healthspan (functionality).
Patrick received his Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education K-12 from Virginia State University and Master of Science degree in Therapeutic Recreation from Indiana University – Bloomington.
Patrick is an ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist (EP), ACSM Certified Personal Trainer (CPT), and ACSM/ACS Certified Cancer Exercise Trainer (CET). He also holds two NASM advanced certifications as a Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES) and a Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES).
Patrick is also the inventor of a Precision Exercise Alignment Mat System PEAMS® that standardizes the push-up exercise which can help schools and organizations (e.g., military, FBI, law enforcement) improve their push-up test reliability as well as for their participants to improve their push-up test performance.
Teaching and learning are his passions and experiencing his clients become healthier is very rewarding.
