PEAMS® 60-SECOND PUSH-UP CHALLENGE
PEAMS® 60-SECOND PUSH-UP CHALLENGE
How Many Proper Push-Ups Can You Complete in 60 Seconds?
Measure. Position. Perform. Count.
The PEAMS® 60-Second Push-Up Challenge is designed to test how many properly performed push-ups a participant can complete in 60 seconds.
To promote consistency and fairness, participants do not choose their own hand width. Instead, each participant’s hand position is determined using the PEAMS® Push-Up Mat based on their individual shoulder-width measurement.
The Challenge
MEASURE → POSITION → READY → GO → 60 SECONDS → COUNT YOUR REPS
Before your attempt, an event official will:
- Measure your shoulder width.
- Use the official PEAMS®measurement chart to determine your hand position.
- Position you on the PEAMS® Push-Up Mat.
- Verify your starting position and movement standard.
- Start the 60-second challenge.
Your final score is the total number of valid push-ups completed within 60 seconds.
1. WHY PEAMS®?
1. WHY PEAMS®?
Hand position can influence push-up performance.
If participants are allowed to select their own hand width, two people with similar shoulder widths could perform the challenge using significantly different hand positions.
The PEAMS® system provides a standardized approach:
Shoulder Width → PEAMS® Measurement Chart → Designated Hand Position → Standardized Performance
This approach is intended to improve the consistency, reliability, and fairness of the challenge.
HOW YOUR HAND POSITION IS DETERMINED
HOW YOUR HAND POSITION IS DETERMINED
Step 1 — Measure
Before your attempt, an event official will measure your shoulder width using a measuring tape.
Shoulder Width: __________ inches
Step 2 — Determine Your PEAMS® Position
Your shoulder-width measurement will be matched to the official PEAMS® Push-Up Hand-Width Measurement Chart.
The chart will identify your designated hand-position location on the PEAMS® Push-Up Mat.
PEAMS® Hand Position: __________________
Step 3 — Position
You will assume the starting position on the PEAMS® Push-Up Mat.
Your hands must be placed on the designated PEAMS® markings corresponding to your measurement.
Participants may not select a different hand position.
Step 4 — Verify
Before the challenge begins, the event official will verify that:
- Both hands are on the designated PEAMS® markings.
- The hands are properly aligned.
- The participant has assumed the required starting position.
- The participant understands the required push-up movement.
Once the position has been verified, the participant is ready to compete.
SEE BELOW 👇 FOR OUR OFFICIAL RULES1. STARTING POSITION
1. STARTING POSITION
Each participant must begin in the following position:
- Hands placed on the designated PEAMS® hand-position markings.
- Hands and fingers in contact with the mat.
- Arms extended.
- Body maintained in a generally straight line from shoulders through hips to ankles.
- Feet in contact with the floor.
- Participant is stationary and ready for the start command.
The official will announce:
“Ready… 3… 2… 1… GO!”
The 60-second clock begins on “GO!”
2. WHAT COUNTS AS A PUSH-UP
2. WHAT COUNTS AS A PUSH-UP
A repetition counts when the participant:
- Begins in the required starting position.
- Lowers the body to the required bottom position.
- Meets the designated bottom-position standard.
- Returns to the required top position.
- Maintains the required body position throughout the repetition.
Only repetitions that meet the complete movement standard will be counted.
Partial repetitions do not count.
3. REQUIRED BOTTOM POSITION
3. REQUIRED BOTTOM POSITION
The participant must lower their body sufficiently to meet the designated bottom-position standard.
The designated bottom-position would be elbows bent at a 90 degree angle
The event staff will demonstrate the required movement before participants compete.
The PEAMS® mat will be used as part of the standardized setup for the challenge.
Participants should not attempt to shorten the movement by performing shallow or partial push-ups.
4. REQUIRED TOP POSITION
4. REQUIRED TOP POSITION
At the top of each repetition:
- The arms must return to full or substantially full extension.
- The participant must return to the required starting body position.
- The participant may not use repeated partial movements to accumulate repetitions.
The designated top-position is head, shoulders, hips and toes in alignment
A repetition that does not meet the required standard will not be counted.
5. BODY POSITION
5. BODY POSITION
Participants should maintain a controlled and recognizable push-up throughout the challenge.
The following will not count as valid repetitions:
- Performing the movement from the knees.
- Significantly sagging the hips.
- Excessively raising the hips.
- Failing to reach the required bottom position.
- Failing to return to the required top position.
- Moving the hands away from the designated PEAMS® position.
- Substantially changing body position to reduce the required range of motion.
Minor movement associated with fatigue is acceptable as long as the participant continues to meet the required repetition standard.
6. RESTING DURING THE CHALLENGE
6. RESTING DURING THE CHALLENGE
Participants may:
- Continue performing push-ups for the entire 60 seconds.
- Pause and rest during the challenge.
- Resume performing push-ups after resting.
- Voluntarily stop before the 60 seconds expires.
The clock continues to run during all rest periods.
7. END OF THE CHALLENGE
7. END OF THE CHALLENGE
The official timer will announce:
“10 seconds!”
when 10 seconds remain.
At the end of the challenge, the official will announce:
“3… 2… 1… STOP!”
Participants must stop performing push-ups when the 60-second period expires.
A repetition that has not been completed before time expires will not count.
8. JUDGING & COUNTING
8. JUDGING & COUNTING
Each participant will have a designated judge or event official.
The judge will:
- Verify the participant’s starting position.
- Confirm the PEAMS® hand position.
- Count valid repetitions.
- Identify repetitions that do not meet the required standard.
- Record the participant’s final score.
If a repetition does not meet the standard, the judge may announce:
“No rep.”
A No Rep does not subtract from the participant’s score. The repetition simply does not receive a count.
The judge’s determination regarding individual repetitions is final.
9. OFFICIAL SCORE
9. OFFICIAL SCORE
A participant’s score is the total number of valid push-ups completed within 60 seconds.
For example:
47 valid push-ups = official score of 47
Only valid, completed repetitions count toward the participant’s final score.
10. TIES
10. TIES
If two or more participants finish with the same highest score in their division, the tied participants will compete in a 30-second tiebreaker.
The same PEAMS® hand-positioning and push-up standards will apply.
The participant with the most valid push-ups during the tiebreaker wins.
If necessary, the event organizer may conduct an additional tiebreaker round.
11. SAFETY
11. SAFETY
Participant safety always comes before competition.
Participants may stop their attempt at any time.
Participants should stop immediately if they experience:
- Significant pain
- Dizziness
- Chest discomfort
- Unusual shortness of breath
- Feeling faint or unwell
- Any other concerning symptoms
Event officials may stop an attempt if they believe continuing could present a safety concern.
Participants are expected to follow all instructions provided by event staff.
12. SPORTSMANSHIP
12. SPORTSMANSHIP
All participants are expected to:
- Treat judges, volunteers, participants, and spectators respectfully.
- Follow the challenge rules.
- Accept judging decisions.
- Compete honestly.
- Avoid interfering with another participant.
- Demonstrate good sportsmanship.
Unsportsmanlike conduct or intentional attempts to circumvent the rules may result in disqualification.
13. EQUIPMENT
13. EQUIPMENT
Official challenge attempts must be performed using the event-provided PEAMS® Push-Up Mat and designated challenge setup.
Participants may not move, modify, or substitute the equipment without permission from the event organizer.
THE PEAMS® STANDARD
THE PEAMS® STANDARD
The purpose of the PEAMS® Push-Up Mat is to establish a consistent hand-width position for every participant based on their individual shoulder measurement.
Rather than allowing participants to estimate or select their own hand position:
- MEASURE
Measure the participant’s shoulder width. - DETERMINE
Use the official PEAMS® measurement chart. - POSITION
Place the participant’s hands on the corresponding PEAMS® markings. - VERIFY
Confirm the participant’s starting position and movement standard. - PERFORM
Complete as many valid push-ups as possible in 60 seconds. - COUNT
Count only valid, completed repetitions.
Our Goal
Measure. Standardize. Perform. Count.
The PEAMS® system is designed to create a consistent starting position so participants can focus on one thing:
How many proper push-ups can you complete in 60 seconds?
